Emergency medicine is one of the most stressful jobs on the planet, but doctors and nurses at Vanderbilt University Medical Center are improving the mood and smell of the ER using essential oils and aromatherapy.
Hospitals have a certain smell. “It makes you sad, brings back old memories,” says one person in the video. “It smells like death,” says another. But thanks to the Aroma-Ace Essential Oils Diffuser, the hospital smell has disappeared. They're using our essential oil diffuser to dispense a therapeutic scent into the air — lime, lemon, orange and more. “It's very pleasant, fresh and clean,” says one nurse.
The ER's Wellness Committee decided to test essential oils to not only improve the smell but also the workplace. The results are dramatic: according to their survey of more than 100 ER staff members, BEFORE using the essential oils diffuser, 41% of them said they were stressed out at work. AFTER the using the essential oils diffuser, only 3% were stressed. Prior to aromatherapy, 60% of ER staff members were frustrated at work, after using the essential oils diffuser, only 6% felt frustrated.
Of course, there were plenty of skeptics. “I thought it was ‘voodoo' medicine,” said one nurse. “This is never going to work.” Now she and others are using the essential oils diffuser at home.
84% of the nurses and doctors strongly agree that the use of essential oils contributes to a more positive work environment. It's not a medical treatment but a complimentary therapy for patients.
Wondering how essential oils work? When the oils are diffused into the air, the aromatic molecules are inhaled. They interact with the bodies olfactory nerves and limbic system. The limbic system is directly connected with parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels and other emotions. The scents have a powerful effect.
